Hi, I'm Wendy Sun 孙老师 👋
I hold a Master's and a Bachelor's in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, taught Chinese in Dubai for two years, and have 9+ years of teaching experience — including 6+ years teaching Mandarin online to students across the U.S. I offer two programs: ongoing lessons for long-term fluency, and a short pre-trip course that gets you through immigration, directions and daily life on your next trip to China.
No commitment · English-friendly · Long-term learners & pre-trip travelers both welcome
Nine years of teaching Chinese to the world — from classrooms in Dubai to online lessons with students across the United States.
Nǐ hǎo! I'm Wendy Sun. I'm a native Mandarin speaker based in Hangzhou, with a Master's degree and a Bachelor's degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (对外汉语) — both completed full-time in mainland China.
I've spent nine years teaching Mandarin to international learners — two of them living in Dubai, teaching Chinese to students from all over the world, and over six years teaching online to students across the U.S. and beyond. Before that, I taught Chinese language arts in mainland primary, middle and high schools — including a term as a primary school Chinese teacher and deputy homeroom teacher — so explaining grammar clearly, to a 10-year-old or a 40-year-old, is second nature to me.
My lessons are conversation-first: from lesson one, you'll be speaking, not just memorizing flashcards. For long-term students, I blend real-life dialogues, culture stories, and just enough grammar to make things click. For travelers, we skip the theory and drill exactly what you'll need at the airport, in a taxi, or at a hotel front desk — so you can travel independently and confidently.
Whether you're in it for the long run or getting ready for a trip next month — there's a track for you. Both start with a free 20-minute trial lesson.
Steady, structured one-on-one lessons that take you from your first pinyin to genuine fluency — at your own pace, week after week. This is the track for learners who want Chinese to become a real, lasting skill.
A focused crash course for travelers heading to China: typically 6–10 hours before takeoff, so you can clear immigration, ask for directions, order food and get around — without relying on a translation app for every sentence.
📍 Each session includes a recording of the key phrases, plus a personalized cheat-sheet organized by your travel dates. Booking with less than 2 weeks before departure? Tell me your travel date and I'll build a compressed 4-hour express version.
Clips from real lessons — both my long-term classes and my pre-trip crash sessions — so you know exactly what my teaching feels like.
The #1 beginner struggle, solved with gestures and real examples. From my mini-course "Mandarin Kickstart".
A real role-play from my trip-prep course: how a student learns to ask for directions, confirm details and understand the answer back — before landing in China.
Language lives inside culture. A taste of how we bring Chinese festivals, food and stories into lessons.
Real words from learners across the United States.
"I'd tried three apps and quit three apps. Wendy Laoshi got me actually *speaking* in the first lesson. Six months later I held a full conversation with my girlfriend's parents in Shanghai."
"Her HSK prep is next level. She knew exactly what the exam rewards and drilled me efficiently — I passed HSK 4 with a 287/300."
"I had a business trip to Shenzhen three weeks out and zero Chinese. Ten trip-prep hours later I cleared immigration, grabbed a DiDi and checked into my hotel on my own. Best money I've ever spent before a flight."
Email is the fastest way to reach me — I read every message myself and usually reply within a few hours (U.S. mornings are my daytime too).
Tell me your current level and what you'd like to work on — long-term lessons or a pre-trip course. Not sure yet? Just say "free trial" and we'll start with a 20-minute session.
✈️ Traveling to China soon? Mention your travel dates & cities in your message and I'll reply with a trip-prep plan and how many hours you'll need.
